Resumo

A considerable amount of conflicting and insufficiently explained data on the incipient boiling superheat of the liquid alkali metals have been presented. Many parameters have been shown or postulated to affect the nucleation conditions and, in this paper, it is demonstrated that several of these parameters are interrelated. Experimental support of the authors' nucleation model is presented in which the importance of the pre-boiling system history and inert gas effects in pool boiling is clearly shown. These two effects account for the observation of several other apparent effects, e.g., heat flux. This paper also identifies the essential information that must be used to characterize liquid metal, incipient boiling experiments.
