Resumo

The paper presents a theoretical discussion of ice formation in a pipe which is convectively-cooled by an external fluid stream. Under uniform external convection the problem assumes an axi-symmetric form and is considered in two parts: a region in which superheat prevents freezing of the water and another in which it does not. The analysis yields the length of the ice-free zone and provides a description of the ice-water interface and its effect on pressure when the water flow rate is fixed. Both steady and unsteady conditions are discussed.
