Resumo

Heat transfer rates in insulating liquids can be affected by the presence of electric fields. The present study is concerned with such phenomena, and especially their influence on heat transfer in an annulus where flow conditions, in the absence of the electric field, are laminar. In general d.c. fields (predominantly radial) increase heat transfer coefficients considerably, and although these increases are accompanied by increased axial pressure drop the coupling between heat transfer and pressure drop is more advantageous than that associated with normal convection processes. This coupling together with the electrical current measurements indicates the nature of the underlying physical process, and forms the basis for a proposed heat transfer model.
