Laser pulses are being widely used in material processing for their high precision and low cost processing. In order to understand the laser machining mechanism, a thermal analysis of the process is of utmost importance. In the present study, heat transfer mechanisms relevant to pulsed laser heating is solved numerically using the Kinetic Theory Approach for different types of laser pulses. The comparison between the temperature profiles developed due to different pulses is also carried out. The temperature rise depends upon the laser and material properties. These include laser power, pulse duration, absorption coefficient, specific heat and thermal conductivity of the material. The subsequent cooling rates may range from 108 deg C/sec to 1014 deg C/sec.
