Problems related to beaded and intrinsic thermocouples were studied both theoretically and experimentally. Two analysis of the measured temperatures of a bead thermocouple Tm and an intrinsic thermocouple Tμ in transient and steady state regimes are given. These analysis show the temperature disturbance in both cases and in particular the thermal contact resistance influence. For the intrinsic thermocouple, Tμ corresponds to the average of the micro contact temperatures. For the beaded thermocouple, Tm corresponds to the temperature of the separation of the wires. The transient analytical solution for a step change in the body's initial temperature was obtained by the unsteady surface element method U.S.E.M.. A number of typical examples showing the influence of the body’s and the wire’s thermal properties, the thermal conductance and the partial contact radius on Tμ and Tm are given. The experimental study involves the investigation of the two cases in transient and steady state modes. The experimental apparatus is described and the measured temperatures Tm and Tμ are compared with the values predicted by the theoretical analysis mentioned above.
