AN EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL STUDY OF SOLIDIFICATION OF A BINARY MIXTURE
要約
Solidification of a binary mixture from below has been investigated experimentally and analytically. Different concentrations of an n-octadecane - n-hexadecane paraffin mixture were studied. Observation of the solidification process revealed the existence of a mushy zone comprised of small dendrites protruding vertically into the surrounding liquid. Solidification occurred such that the dendrite tips advanced in a horizontal plane, suggesting that the configuration was both thermally and solutally stable. The measured temperatures in the mushy zone fell approximately between the solidus and liquidus line except early in the process, when slight subcooling and/or species diffusion in the liquid may have affected solidification Based on the experimental observations a one-dimensional theoretical model is formulated. Comparison of predicted and measured mushy zone growth and transient temperature distribution shows reasonably good agreement.
