Experimental measurements of the local skin friction and velocity profiles in an incompressible turbulent boundary layer are reported. A Preston tube was calibrated under slightly favorable pressure gradient conditions and used to measure skin friction in adverse and favorable pressure gradient situations.
For extremely favorable gradients the experimental values agreed to within 1% with those obtained with the well known Blasius formula, to within 6% of the Ludwieg-Tillmann prediction and to within 3% of values obtained using the Bartz-Sibulkin method.
For adverse pressure gradient, the experimental values were within 19% of the Blasius relation, 5% of the Ludwieg-Tillmann relation, and differed by 19% from the Bartz-Sibulkin method.
