Experimental study on incipient boiling of thin liquid films flowing down the outside surface of a heated vertical tube is reported. According to test data interpretation, an empirical formula of incipient boiling heat flux as a function of the superheat and a correlation of the mean Nusselt number (i.e. the Nusselt number time-averaged over the full length of the test section) vs. the film Reynolds number are proposed. They are compared with some published results. Experimental parameters are as follows: the film inlet temperature Tin = 96-98; the film flow rate per unit perimeter Γ = 0.1098-1.378 kg/sm; the film Reynolds number Re = 1.55×103-1.95×104 for Tin = 98 or Re = 440-5500 for Tin = 20; and the maximum heat flux is up to 7.56×104 W/m2.
