HEAT TRANSFER DISTRIBUTION DUE TO ARRAYS OF LIQUID SPRAYS IMPINGING ON A CYLINDRICAL SURFACE

Résumé

Data are presented on the discribucion of local heat transfer coefficient due to an array of conical water sprays impinging on a cylindrical surface. A transient heat transfer technique was used with a liquid crystal layer to record the temperature response of the surface as a function of time.
Using 30° cone sprays nominally overlapping by 50%, coefficient maxima were measured at the spray centres. In the indirect regions, where the spray ran off the roll, the coefficients had maxima between the sprays; this was due to thick lines of coolant resulting from interaction between adjacent sprays. Using 60° sprays with the same nominal overlap no maxima at the spray centres could be detected.
Data are given for the effect of switching off members of the spray array. When more than two adjacent sprays were switched off, the remaining parts of the array behaved as if they were isolated.
The effect of increasing glancing angle of the sprays was to increase the net heat transfer effect by maintaining higher coefficients over larger surface areas.
