Résumé

A mechanical model is proposed for prediction of boiling inception condition. Both the contact angle hysteresis and the reentrant cavity are introduced as mechanisms for entrapment of vapor in the cavity. The predicted boiling inception condition depends on the most stringent suppression, the advancing and receding contact angles and one of the angles characterizing the cavity shape. If the advancing contact angle is less than about 20°, boiling will hardly commence from a commercial surface. The prediction for a combination of water and stainless steel surface fairly well agrees with Fabic's experimental result. However, the prediction for the platinum surface rather differs from another existing experimental result. Boiling of water may hardly commence from clean stainless steel surfaces. Inception of boiling of water from platinum surfaces will not be greatly affected by contamination.
