Résumé

A technique is presented for measuring the flow distribution in the bypass lane of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger, by video recording particles suspended in the flow. The velocity of a large number of particles in the bypass flow can be determined at one time. Using the large quantity of information available, flow fractions for any tube in the crossflow region of the bypass lane and flow distribution along each tube can be found. Velocity profiles and particle tracks for the bypass lane are presented. Bypass fractions are compared with predictions based on previous data for rectangular tube banks with bypass, on which most calculation methods for shellside flows currently rely.
