Numerical Simulation of Three-Dimensional Laminar Multiple Impinging Square Jets for a Small Nozzle to Plate Spacing

Résumé

The flow and heat transfer characteristics of an impinging laminar 3×3 square array of axisymmetric air jets have been investigated numerically through the solution of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes and energy equations at steady state. The simulations have been carried out for jet to jet spacings between 4D and 8D and for a nozzle exit to plate distance of 1D, where D is the jet width. The calculated results indicate a rather complexflow field with a peripheral vortexaround each jet and an upwash fountain flow at the collision point of the jets. It has been found that, for the rather small nozzle to plate spacing investigated, the uniform jet velocity profile at the nozzle exit is transformed into a non-uniform profile having four off-center velocity peaks downstream of the nozzles. These peaks result in the formation of four off-center peaks in the Nusselt number profile at the impingement plate.
