The influence of heat on the 3D-transition of the cylinder wake flow

Résumé

The influence of a heat input on the 3D-transition of the von Karman vortex street behind a cylinder is investigated. Both an electro-chemical tin-precipitation visualization method and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) are used. The results show that the formation of thermal plumes downstream is directly associated with the 3D-structures occurring right behind the cylinder. The spanwise positions where the thermal plumes escaped are determined by the occurrence of these 3D-structures. The experimental observation shows that the wake becomes three dimensional for Ri > 0.3.
