Résumé

The dynamic response of fixed beds packed with glass ballotini has been measured for a range of particle Reynolds number from 1 to 300. The thermal conductivity of the particles, the particle to fluid heat transfer coefficient and the coefficient of axial thermal dispersion have been calculated throughout this range of Reynolds numbers; the coefficients were obtained by a minimum-variance search in the Laplace transform domain.

The relationship of the experimental results to earlier work is considered, with particular note of inaccuracies in the earlier work due to the neglect of the effects of thermal dispersion and intraparticle conduction in the analysis of the experimental responses.

The experimental method is compared with the method of experimental frequency response. It is found that although pulse response is quicker, the experimental accuracy is not as good as that obtained for experimental frequency response.
