EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF STABILITY EFFECTS IN LAMINAR FILM CONDENSATION ON A VERTICAL CYLINDER
Résumé
An experimental investigation of film condensation is reported. Special emphasis has been placed on effect of liquid-vapor interfacial stability and vapor phase
stability on the condensation process. The onset of interfacial wave motion was determined visually with the aid of a strob light. Vapor phase instability was
found to exist when the vapor contained a noncondensable gas. Evidence of secondary vapor circulation was inferred from a combination of visual observation of
mist particles, Schlieren photography, and visual observation of an interfacial wave pheonomenon associated with condensation in the presence of noncondensables.
The effect on the condensation process of noncondensable gases having widely different molecular weights is reported.
