Résumé

Cellular convection is predicted and experimentally checked in a strictly horizontal rectangular cavity heated nonuniformly from above. The rules are formulated which allow prediction of the main features of the flow structure depending on the temperature distribution. It is found that the flow structure is stable as a whole, but its individual elements are very sensitive to the change of the heating laws, heat transfer being conservative. When ΔTLmax/ Δ Thmax ~ 1, the convection effect on heat transfer becomes appreciable beginning with Ra ~ 104. Contrary to heating from above in case of nonuniform heating from below when ΔTL increases, not only the circulation rate increases but a number of transitions of the flow structures is experimentally found.
