Sinopsis

This study concerns the cooling capacity of a pressurized water reactor (PWR) by a two-phase flow of superheated vapor and droplets under a loss of coolant accident (LOCA) at a sub-channel scale. In order to characterize the cooling of deformed zones between the ballooned fuel rods, an experimental set-up has been developed. The heat removed during the cooling phase is investigated with the use of infrared thermography (IRT) while the droplet properties (i.e droplet and velocity distributions) are characterized simultaneously by a Phase Doppler system. In parallel, measurements of Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) are performed to obtain the droplet temperature. The influence of the droplet inlet mass flow is investigated in the present paper for a representative non-deformed sub-channel geometry.
