Sinopsis

The increase of the data center power density drives the need of avoiding cooling issues (e.g., over-cooling) and improving the effectiveness and efficiency of data center thermal management. The use of reversible fan unit on the cold aisle tiles might serve as a meaningful methodology by effectively redistributing the airflow and playing a more efficient role of data center airflow cooling. The purpose of present research is to numerically investigate the characteristics as the reversible fan unit can be more appropriately utilized by switching the specific location of the fan unit underneath the cold aisle, together with the open area ratio of the perforations. Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach, the cooling performance of the fan unit and the airflow rate emerging from each perforated tile, as a function of the included parameters, were numerically analyzed. The results indicate that the included key parameters (e.g. the fan unit positioning; the tile perforation properties) for the reversible fan system are capable of significantly governing the tile flow distributions, and in the meantime, making a reasonable sense of improving the data center cooling efficiencies.
