Sinopsis

In order to achieve dissimilar heat transfer enhancement, direct numerical simulation of a laminar developing flow between two parallel plates is conducted with streamwise traveling wave of wall blowing and suction as the control input. First, we conducted a parametric survey to identify the most suitable combination of phase speed and wavelength of this traveling wave to achieve dissimilar heat transfer enhancement. Secondly, we carried out the optimal control analysis with the best traveling wave solution obtained from the parametric survey as the initial control input. The optimal control input is obtained by minimizing the cost functional that consists of two terms, which respectively represent the cost of the applied control and the resultant dissimilar effect. We found that the dissimilar effect resulting from the optimal control analysis is significantly larger than that obtained from the parametric study. Our results also show that the resulting optimal control input is still a traveling wave, but the wave parameters are no longer uniform along the streamwise direction. Furthermore, we found that the maximum dissimilarity is created in the region very close to the inlet of the channel.
