Sinopsis

Methods for designing radiant heat systems are discussed. The choice of appropriate heater inputs and locations to provide a required heat load and temperature distribution on a material to be processed (heated, cured, annealed, etc.) requires solution of an ill-conditioned set of nonlinear integral-differential equations for system design. The appropriate choice of solution method is discussed for systems where continuous or discrete heater arrays are to be used, and where transient heating profiles are needed while maintaining uniform temperatures at each instant. Radiative design problems of this type differ from more common inverse problems because their solution involves solution of the more complicated equation type rather than differential equations, and the existence of multiple acceptable solutions is a desired outcome, instead of a nuisance.
