Sinopsis

Combined heat and mass transfer is of interest for applications within electric power transmission and distribution. Heat generation often takes place in conducting parts enclosed inside solid insulation, and the solid insulation may contain substances that are free to redistribute through diffusion. The diffusing substance could be air or water emanating from the surrounding atmosphere, or substances that remain from production processes. In the present paper it is discussed how diffusion is connected to a temperature gradient, and a modified form of Fick's second law is proposed. Results from experiments and numerical simulations are described for stationary as well as time dependent cases.
