Sinopsis

A solidification of a packed bed of glass beads saturated with aqueous sodium chloride solution which was cooled initially below the freezing point was investigated analytically and experimentally. First, growth velocities-of dendrite in the porous medium (packed bed) were measured for cases of various mean diameters of glass beads and different concentration of the solution and the results were compared with ones analyzed by Lipton's model. Next, experiments and an analvsis of the solidification in a rectangular cell were carried out. Characteristics of the solidification with which the initial supercooling and the natural convection due to both temperature and concentration gradients were associated were clarified.
