Sinopsis

Vapor absorption in the presence of non-condensables is characterized by high concentration levels of absorbate in both the liquid film and the gas phase. Therefore, the lateral convective term ought to be included in formulating the transport equations. The analysis indicates that models, which are based on diluted solution assumption, are not suitable for predicting concentration profiles, and, therefore, yield large deviations in the predicted mass transfer rates. Both the mass transfer coefficient and the process driving force are found to be dependent on the absorbate concentration levels in the vapor and liquid phases.
The results are scaled to yield correction factors for the augmentation of the transfer rates due to finite absorbate concentrations and the degradation expected due to the presence of non-condensables. These correction factors can be further useful for scaling the widely available mass transfer correlations obtained for absorption of sparingly soluble gases to predict mass transfer coefficients in vapor absorption.
