Sinopsis

Combined mode heat transfer is solved for a sphere surrounded by a spherical layer of gray, absorbing, emitting material. The objectives of this paper are to apply the discrete ordinates method for radiative transfer to a combined mode heat transfer solution, and to use this solution to define the parametric limits within which radiation and conduction must be treated together in a combined process. These limits are also important to the study of combined radiation and convection, as the convection process is primarily conductive at small distances from the surface. The effect of diffuse surface reflection from the sphere's surface is also studied.
