Sinopsis

An exact solution is presented for the problem of steady laminar forced-free convection in three adjacent two-dimensional ducts when the volume flux of fluid in the middle duct is balanced by that in the outer ducts. The outer walls are heated, or cooled, uniformly and a constant pressure gradient is applied to the flow in the middle duct. The character of the solution depends on the sense of the temperature gradient. With this flux conservation and when the temperature decreasing with height, the outer wall acts as an insulator and 'thermal runaway' occurs at a lower value of the Rayleigh number than it would in a single duct. Results are presented for various values of the parameters, and comparisons made with previous work. This two-dimensional approximation of circulating flows is of vital importance in our understanding of the physical mechanisms involved in numerous applications.
