Sinopsis

Finite amplitude void wave propagation in bubbly two-phase flows has been investigated analytically.
Making a Galilean transformation to the two-fluid conservation equations, different types of nonlinear void wave phenomena, such as solitons, shocks and rarefactions, and their respective celerities, can be predicted. The nonlinear void wave speed is shown to be a generalization of the kinematic void wave speed. Indeed, it is found that nonlinearity increases the void wave speed compared to the kinematic (ie, linear) approximation.
A wave breaking phenomenon is found in large amplitude void waves, which is sensitive to the two-fluid model's constitutive relations. Large values of the virtual volume coefficient and small values of the interfacial pressure difference and the Reynolds stress coefficients promote void wave breaking. Among these effects, the virtual mass force is the most important when the void fraction is large.
The results of this study indicate that the investigation of nonlinear void wave phenomena is an excellent means of assessing two-fluid model constitutive relations.
