Sinopsis

Experiments were conducted on freelу falling mono-sized coal-oil slurry droplets in a heated air environment which simulated that of a furnace. Ouenched samples of these droplets were analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SF.M) techniques. The volatility of the oil slurry was varied bv blending No. 2 and No. 6 oils in various amounts. The concentration of coal particles in the slurrv and the size of the individual coal particles was varied in addition to the droplet's residence time In the high temperature air environment. These experiments demonstrate that agglomerates of coal particles are formed once the volatile oil components are depleted and that the structure of the agglomerates varies significantly depending on the volatility and the viscosity of the liquid component of the slurry. Estimations are made of the threshold composition of the slurrv at which the basic characteristic of the resultant agglomerate changes. It is expected the use of No. 6 oil will be similar to that of neat No. 6 oil. However, components which raise the volatility of the droplet are expected to produce more detrimental type of agglomerates, influence the ignition process and increase the total burning time.
