Sinopsis

We study a uniform flow of a very high temperature gas over a semi-infinite flat plate such that the radiative heat transfer is of the same order of magnitude as those heat transfers by conduction and by convection-First we consider the case where the three modes of heat transfer are of the same order of magnitude and the boundary layer approximations hold. We reexamine this problem by considering the case of finite mean free path of radiation such that the radiative heat transfer is expressed in integral form. We solve numerically the system of integro-differential equations of the laminar boundary layer flow of a radiating gray gas. The results are compared with the limiting cases of optically thick medium where Rosseland expression may be used and of optically thin medium where simple emissivity coefficient expression may be used. The temperature distribution and the heat transfer rate at various Mach number and temperature range from 5,000°K to 40,000°K of the free stream are presented.
