Sinopsis

This paper describes the method used and results obtained on tests carried out to determine the heat transfer coefficient of individual tubes in a 100,000 sq.ft. surface type steam condenser. For a cooling water velocity of 7 ft/sec. and inlet temperature of about 80°F, the results show a coefficient of heat transfer of 1000 Btu/h.sq.ft. °F for tubes at the top of the nest and a coefficient of 400 Btu/h.sq.ft.°F for tubes near the bottom. This variation is due to the much larger variation in the steam side coefficient - from about 6000 to 550 Btu/h.sq.ft. °F. The two main influences causing this wide variation of the steam side coefficient are considered to be steam velocity and drenching of the lower tubes by condensate falling from the upper ones.
