Sinopsis

Spatial distributions of liquid cascading over inclined tubes in a model bundle which represents part of a large coil wound heat exchanger have been measured. The overall purpose is to assess how liquid distribution and later outside heat transfer coefficients would be affected by marine tilt and motion for such an exchanger proposed for offshore floating production of LNG. Variables were liquid feed rate, surface tension and degree of tilt. Spacer rods between layers of tubes were found to promote run off from the tubes and hence less even distributions even in the normal orientation. Tilt of 8° caused substantial bias. Reducing the liquid surface tension by about 50% gave more even distributions as did increasing feed rate. Mechanisms involved are discussed briefly.
