Sinopsis

This paper presents a numerical study on the application of a soot model and discrete ordinates method to a turbulent buoyant fire in a two-room configuration. The model predictions are evaluated as part of a complete prediction procedure involving the modelling of the simultaneously occurring flow, convection, combustion, soot formation and burnout processes and radiation phenomena. Computational results with and without radiation are compared against experimental data. The contribution of soot augmenting the global radiation is also assessed. The results have demonstrated that the effect of thermal radiation is important, and that the discrete ordinates method can be applied in compartment fires, yielding reasonable accurate predictions. The presence of soot radiation was seen to significantly improve the accuracy of the model predictions.
