Sinopsis

This paper presents a methodology for designing radiant enclosures using non-linear programming. The design objective is to determine the heater settings that result in the desired temperature and heat-flux distributions over a design surface in a 2-D diffuse-walled radiant enclosure. The primal problem is solved using an infinitesimal-area approach, and the design is optimised using Newton's method. Sensitivities are calculated by direct differentiation. The technique is demonstrated by solving an industrially-relevant design problem.
