Sinopsis

Condensation heat transfer inside channels plays a key role in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump applications. In the recent years the science of in-tube condensation has been severely challenged by the adoption of new working fluids and new channels for heat exchangers. Well-known semiempirical correlations to estimate heat transfer and pressure drop during condensation showed to be quite inaccurate with new applications and a significant effort is being made in order to characterise two-phase flow conditions and to link new predictive procedures to the flow pattern. This paper presents a review of visualisation studies conducted during two-phase flow inside smooth and enhanced tubes and inside micro-channels. It also critically reviews some well-known correlations available in the literature, in order to suggest predictive procedures to be used in the design of a condenser, with regard both to heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop.
