Sinopsis

Theoretical equations are presented for the heat transfer coefficient from heated walls to a stagnant as well as a perfectly mixed bed. In the range which is limited by these equations, all heat transfer coefficients for any agitated bed must be found. Measurements by instationary heating of a bed from glass-, polystyrene- and bronze spheres confirm this prediction. At low pressure the heat transfer coefficient reaches its maximum value corresponding to a perfectly mixed bed independent of the intensity of agitation. This maximum heat transfer coefficient is presumably influenced by the so called quantum mechanical "tunnel effect" in the case of metal spheres.
