Sinopsis

The results of a study of jet impingement heat transfer phenomena are presented in summary form. The principal aim of the study was to investigate the viability of an array of impinging jets as a compact heat exchanger.
Experimental measurement was made of the local heat transfer coefficient distribution and of the velocity and turbulence distributions in the impinging jet flow for Reynolds numbers in the range 103 to 20 × 103, the nozzle to impingement surface distance being varied in the range 0.5 to 3 nozzle diameters. The effect of varying the nozzle pitch in a square-pitched array was investigated over the range of nozzle pitch from 5 to 9.5 nozzle diameters. Broadly, the experimental results substantiate a physical model of heat transfer under an impinging jet proposed by Gardon and Akfirat (5). In addition some enhancement of heat transfer, compared with the single jet characteristic, was noted at the smallest nozzle pitch studied.
An attempt was made to simulate the impinging jet using an existing streamline - vorticity turbulent flow modelling program. The program was found to predict successfully the principal features of the flow, but the prediction of heat transfer from the impinging surface was poor.
The viability of multiple impinging jets as a compact heat exchanger configuration was investigated theoretically using the criterion of Kays, London and Johnson (13).
