Sinopsis

The instability of liquid film flow down an inclined plane when heated from below is investigated. It is shown that, within the confines of the Boussinesq approximation, buoyancy has no effect upon the hydrodynamic mode of instability which can occur in the isothermal case. The thermal mode of instability assumes the form of longitudinal rolls. However, the hydrodynamic mode is the more unstable mode typically except for very small angles of the inclination.
