Sinopsis

A two-dimensional natural convection in a shallow inclined enclosure is numerically investigated. The effects of the Rayleigh number, the enclosure orientation and aspect ratio on the flow development and heat transfer are studied. It is found that the nature of these effects is complex. The orientation strongly influences the heat transfer. A negative orientation sharply inhibits convection and hence the energy transport, whereas a slight positive orientation maximizes the heat transfer for a given Rayleigh number. However, the enclosure inclination angle at which this maximum occurs decreases as the Rayleigh number increases. The influence of the aspect ratio on the Nusselt number is very pronounced when the Rayleigh number is small and the enclosure is negatively oriented. In brief, this study shows how to analyze the heat transfer in a given enclosure or design an efficient one by suitably selecting angular orientation or the aspect ratio or both.
