Sinopsis

A simple and effective numerical scheme for one dimensional phase change problems with temperature dependent thermal properties is presented. The method isolates the non-linearity due to the moving interface. At ordinary nodes, away from the interface, a three time level scheme is used that eliminated costly nodal iterations. Numerical results were obtained for the solidification of liquid tin which showed good agreement with the available analytical solution. The method gave considerable reduction in computing time as compared to the existing methods.
