Many physical situations involve the analysis of natural flows in heated enclosures. Some enclosures may contain obstacles that restrict the fluid flow and heat transfer. This study considers the momentum and heat transfer in a rectangular enclosure with a varying number of solid obstacles evenly distributed in the enclosure, with a temperature differential between the vertical walls, and the horizontal walls being adiabatic. This situation is a preliminary model of the fluid flow and heat transfer that takes place in shipping containers where the solid obstacles are considered to be merely conducting. The flow is primarily in the laminar flow regime but at the higher Rayleigh numbers the fluid flow is approaching the transitional regime. The investigation looks at the effects of a number of situations such as the conducting situations, the radiating situations, different Rayleigh numbers and different number of obstacles in the enclosure. An important aspect in this investigation is the effect of radiation on the fluid and heat flow. The radiation effects have been modelled using a discrete ordinate model. The investigation shows the variation of the patterns of fluid flow and temperature profiles in the enclosure and the hot wall Nusselt numbers over a range of Rayleigh numbers for different numbers of obstacles. It is concluded that radiation is important for the fluid flow and heat transfer when there are obstacles in the enclosure and this holds even in the situation when the temperature difference between the hot and cold walls is small.
