Abstrakt

Thermal visualization is performed to determine unsteady heat transfer in a flow through an array of slanted fins installed vertically on a heated surface coated with a thin sheet of thermosensitive liquid crystal. A stream of cold air flows through the fin array to remove heat from the heated surface in a wind tunnel. Fins are arranged in in-lined and staggered forms. The fin angle, transverse pitch and longitudinal pitch are varied. The visualized image is processed by means of color image processing to quantitatively determine the temperature distribution through the use of a hue angle-temperature correlation curve. The Nussetl number for convective heat transfer between the heatedsurface and the cold fluid is calculated from temperature distribution variation. Pressure drop for flow through each fin array is measured and is expressed in the form of the friction factor. The change in fluid flow patterns through fin arrays is visualized using talc powder as the tracer. Results are correlated as Nussetl number versus friction factor for flow patterns.
