Abstrakt

Despite its importance in the Chemical industry, the design of stirred tank reactors (STR) still relies essentially on empirical methods. No account is taken of the dynamics of the system and uniform mixing and concentrations are assumed throughout the vessel, assumptions which are patently not satisfied. Any improvement in design depends on a knowledge of the flow patterns, temperature distribution and concentrations variations in the vessel. This work presents a computational study on how the flow patterns of a non-Newtonian viscous fluid are affected by different arrangements of internal and external heat transfer surfaces for: (a) jacketed vessels (b) internal helical cooling coils where agitation is provided by a six-blade, Rushton turbine impeller.
