Abstrakt

We report experimental and limited analytical results for fluid-flow and heat transfer over elliptic cylinders in transverse flows in water, trasformer oil and air over the range of Re from lO3 to lO5. Measured local and average heat transfer rates, distributions of pressure and shear stress are presented for free stream turbulence from 0.3 to 10%. The behaviour of hydraulic drag is demonstrated. Hydraulic drag of elliptic cylinders located with the minor axis along the stream is hardly influenced by free stream turbulence. When the major axis is located streamwise, a significant reduction of hydraulic drag was observed at higher levels of free stream turbulence. Predictive relations are suggested for the average heat transfer coefficient over separate circumferential parts of the elliptic cylinder, of ratio minor-to-major axes 1:2. The Prandtl number was varied from 0.7 to 260.
