This paper reports our recent probability analysis on pool boiling phenomena. The new concepts of pure natural convection, pure nucleate boiling and pure film boiling were introduced to study boiling heat transfer. The boiling process in the region of complete boiling curve (from traditional nucleate boiling to film boiling region) was shown as only one in which the area-fractions corresponding to the different modes of heat transfer (pure natural convection, pure nucleate boiling and pure film boiling) change with increasing the surface superheat for a given boiling condition. Based on the assumption that the active sites are randomly distributed on the heating surface and follow a Poisson function, the interaction between active sites was analyzed and the expressions for area-fractions subjected to above three heat transfer modes on whole heating surface for both heating up and cooling down were obtained. The boiling heat transfer was expressed as a sum of the heat fluxes due to the three heat transfer modes. This theory was used to describe complete boiling curve, transition between stable and unstable nucleate boiling, maximum point and minimum point on boiling curve.
