Abstrakt

In this work, the problem of combined free and forced convection around a heated and rotating cylinder is analyzed numerically. A non-staggered grid finite-volume method is used to solve the transport equations. The numerical results, for the pure natural convection case, agree very well with the experiments, with the analytical solution and with another numerical simulation. For the rotating case, the transient flow is visualized. Three regimes can be identified for the combined convection: in the first, the free convection predominates; in the second, the superposition of the rotation of the cylinder over the free convection inhibits the heat exchange, so the Nusselt number decreases; in the third, the forced convection predominates and the Nusselt number increases. These results are interpreted physically.
