Abstrakt

Thermocapillary instability and convection patterns in an evaporating sessile drop with/without point-cooling at the base center of the drop are visualized using microscope-video monitor system. Both cellular convection and unstable roll shape flow are found. The imposed point cooling tends to suppress both flow patterns and induce a stable toroidal vortex around the drop center. The stable thermocapillary flow velocity in sessile drops with internal solidification is measured. An empirical expression is obtained to describe the effects of the Marangoni, Prandtl, Stefan number, and the degree of supercooling on the solid growth velocity.
