Abstrakt

Detection of the thermal conductivity for a gas or a liquid by means of the Seebeck effect is shown both by a theoretical approach and by experiments. The method is based upon heat transfer between the hot junction of a thermocouple heated by an electric current and the surrounding fluid. From the measured Seebeck emf related to the junction temperature, an unknown gas can be identified. A good sensitivity to gas mixtures such as He-N2 is pointed out and some other features for possible sensing devices based upon the present new method are proposed.
