Abstrakt

Dead Sea Works at Sdom, operates industrial plants and facilities for the production of potash (KC1), salts, chlorine and bromine, based on the wealth of dissolved minerals in the Dead Sea waters. In the production of potash by the Hot Leach Process, it is required to heat a concentrated sylvinite (KCl-NaCl) brine with steam, in shell-and-tube heat exchangers. The brine flowing through the tubes contains erosive solids, which cause erosion-corrosion damage of the heater tubes. Two novel instruments for the study and measurement of erosion-corrosion were developed and built at IMI. They simulate the corrosive wear effects of the solids entrained in hot brine. The magnitude of the effect is measured by the electrochemical polarization resistance technique and by weight loss. The instruments were applied to characterize the erosion-corrosion phenomena and to select erosion-corrosion resistant metallic materials such as titanium and high alloy austenitic stainless steel, for the construction of new brine heaters.
