Abstrakt

The experimental results on the buoyancy effect in the stable and unstable stratified flows were summarized.
The distributions of turbulence quantities in both stably and unstably stratified flows are strongly affected by buoyancy and their variations with the stability and instability can be interpreted by the production terms by shear and buoyancy in the respective transport equations.
In strongly stable flow the transports of momentum and heat occur against the velocity and temperature gradients by the buoyancy effect. In unstable flow the buoyancy works so as to enhance the turbulent motion.
The spectral equation model was applied to the stratified flows in order to account for the variations of turbulence quantities with the local gradient Richardson number. The calculated result agrees qualitatively with the measured result.
