Abstrakt

The ridge-like waviness that forms on pressure-tube surfaces during high temperature ballooning is idealized as a sinusoidal waveform, and a simplified model for predicting the thermal resistance when the pressure tube contacts its calandria tube is presented.
The results of laboratory experiments with specimens of pressure and calandria tube confirm the predictions of this simple model, and indicate that it captures the essential features of the solid-to-solid resistance to heat flow across the wavy surface, pressure tube to calandria tube contact.
