Role of thermal radiation in heat transfer across the lightweight, fibrous, high-temperature thermal insulation was studied experimentally in the paper. The front surface of the insulation was irradiated while the back surface was air-cooled. Influence of intensity of irradiation and presence of aluminium foils, placed between separate layers of the insulation on temperature distribution in the insulation were investigated. For high intensity of irradiation temperature distribution in the insulation was highly non-linear. Significant influence of aluminium foil barriers was found especially in this part of the insulation, which was close to the back surface of the insulation. The experimental data for insulation with inserted foils were compared with results of a theoretical analysis. Good correspondence of the results was found.
